Abstract: Plastic polymers present a fundamental environmental problem, which needs to be addressed urgently. The work performed herein, reports the use of alginate for selfproduction of algae-based plastic and addresses issues of bio-degradation. After a period of 12 weeks, clear signs of the degradation process in two different environments (forest floor / salt water) were evident. In any case, significant in-depth research is still necessary to progress this approach.
