description of the individual files:
This dataset is the basis for the publication "Coherent Excitation of the Highly Forbidden Electric Octupole Transition in ${}^{172}$Yb$^+$" by H.A. Fürst et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 125, 163001 – Published 16 October 2020.
The dataset is subdivided into folders for Figs. 2a, 2b and 3 of the main manuscript and Figs. 4 and 5 of the supplemental material and data for the absolute frequency measurements. Further it contains spectroscopic data to characterize the magnetic field environment of the experiment and the optical pumping efficiency. Each folder contains a readme file with additional information about the data and the measurements. Data acquisition was performed by fluorescence imaging of the ions onto an EMCCD camera after an excitation pulse. After readout of a specific region of interest of the camera image, the experimental control software decides whether the ion is in the desired excited state and thus appears dark (excitation successful) or in a bright state (ion still fluorescing).

File content is briefly explained here:
467_flop_*.txt: Scans of the 467nm excitation pulse length to excite the octupole transition, leading to a Rabi-flop to demonstrate fast coherent excitation with high probability.
467_scan_*.txt: Scans of the 467nm excitation pulse frequency to excite the octupole transition, each file contains a spectrum of one transition for a specific excitation pulse length. Files used to map out absolute frequency of the transition and probe-laser-induced AC-Stark shift.
467_RAP_*.txt: Excitation of the octupole transition near 467nm using a rapid adiabatic passage by sweeping the frequency of the excitation pulse across the resonance. Each file contains repetitions of the same settings. From file to file the sweep rate was varied.
411_scan_Delay_*.txt: Scans of the 411nm excitation pulse frequency and a variable delay time after a line trigger that starts the experiment, used to map out the AC line-induced magnetic field fluctuations at 50Hz and harmonics. Each file contains 21 full spectra for delay times of 0 to 20 ms in steps of 1 ms.
411_flop_*.txt: Scans of the 411nm excitation pulse length to excite the quadrupole transition near 411nm wavelength, leading to a Rabi-flop. Files used to check optical pumping efficiency.
411_scan_*.txt: Scans of the 411nm excitation pulse frequency to excite the quadrupole transition, each file contains a spectrum of one transition for a specific excitation pulse length. Files used to map out absolute frequency of the transition and probe-laser-induced AC-Stark shift as well as characterization of the magnetic field environment.
411_scan_935_*.txt: Scans of the 411nm excitation pulse frequency to excite the quadrupole transition, each file contains a spectrum of one transition for a specific excitation pulse length with and without the 935nm repumper laser present during the excitation pulse. Files used to deduce the AC-Stark shift of the quadrupole transition induced by the 935nm light.
*.csv: Corrected 822nm laser frequency deduced from a frequency comb measurement for the respective 411_scan_*.txt file numbers to determine absolute frequency of the quadrupole transition near 411nm. The 411 nm light was deduced from the frequency-doubled 822nm master laser.
